When Deuter was founded in 1898 in Bavaria, Germany, its primary function was the production of mail bags and post sacks. By 1919 it was manufacturing its own range of backpacks, tents and suitcases and in the decades which followed began earning itself an outdoors industry reputation for quality and innovative design. In 1968 Deuter introduced nylon backpacks to the outdoors market. This design was widely imitated and became the industry norm.
